How many South Africans have Internet at home?
Only 10% of citizens have Internet at home. The ICASA State of the ICT Sector report in March 2020 makes this claim and shows the breakdown by province.
Later in March 2020 came the national COVID-19 lockdown:
- Work from home
- Learn from home
This graph suddenly became critical. The definition of ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. The 10% who have the Internet at home pay 1% of the cost of those get Internet ‘Anywhere’ ie using mobile data.
People lost their jobs because they couldn’t work from home. University lectures became poorly attended because many ran out of data and couldn’t afford to be there. Education stopped for 90% of learners between 7-18 years of age. It didn’t stop for all. It stopped for the 90% who do not have Internet at home.
Affordable access to the Internet is no longer a ‘nice to have’. It is a resource that every citizen should have equal access to.
